Why Everything Feels Off

Jun 24, 2026

Even when nothing is wrong.

The environmental energy influencer — and the performance cost of the space you've never thought to examine.

There is a meeting that didn't go the way it should have. A call where you weren't quite yourself. A conversation with an agent you'd been building toward for months — and when it finally happened, something was just slightly off. Not wrong enough to name. Just enough to cost you.

You replayed it afterward. Your preparation was solid. You knew your material. You've had that exact conversation dozens of times and it's landed. So what happened

There's a good chance the answer isn't what you think. And there's an even better chance you've never once considered it.

In this installment of Energy in Motion, we're talking about the environmental energy influencer — and why the space around you is never neutral.

Your environment is an active participant

Many loan officers have spent real time and energy optimizing their process. Their scripts. Their follow-up systems. Their CRM. Their marketing. And yet almost none of them have ever stopped to audit their environment — the physical space where all of that work actually happens — and asked what it's doing to their energy.

Your environment is not a backdrop. It is not neutral. It is an active participant in your performance — helping or hindering, fueling or draining — every single moment you are in it. The temperature of the room. The lighting. The noise level. The clutter on your desk that you've stopped seeing but your brain has not. Whether your equipment works or whether you're fighting your technology before you've made a single call. Whether your clothing is comfortable or subtly constricting your ability to feel like yourself.

These things are in constant conversation with your nervous system — signaling whether this is a space where you can settle in and perform, or a space where part of your energy is quietly being spent on low-grade friction you've stopped consciously noticing. The output of that conversation shows up in your voice, your presence, your focus, and ultimately your results.

The spaces that aren't yours

This becomes even more pronounced when you're working in a space that isn't yours. A builder's office. A realtor's conference room. A coffee shop you chose because you needed a change of scenery. You're doing something you've done a thousand times — and everything just feels off. Not wrong. Just not quite right. And you can't put your finger on why.

That feeling is your environmental energy speaking. The chair isn't right. The lighting is different. The sounds are unfamiliar. None of it is catastrophic on its own — but together it creates just enough friction to take the edge off your performance. And in a relationship-driven business where the edge is everything, that matters.

Here's the critical distinction: not all environmental factors are within our control. You cannot stop the rain. You cannot always choose the room. But you can always control your reaction to those factors — and you can absolutely take steps to optimize the ones you do have the power to change. Both of those are skills. And like all skills, they start with awareness.

Your environmental audit

This week I want you to do something most people never do — look at your primary workspace with genuine intention. Not to overhaul it. Just to see it clearly for the first time in a while.

How does your environment — the noise, the temperature, the comfort, the openness or the clutter — contribute to your ability to carry out the work you're setting out to do? What specific elements might be quietly draining your energy right now?

Think about the conditions where you've felt most focused and energized in the past. What was true about that space? What kind of energy did you want to feel there — and what invited it in?

And then ask yourself: what is one small environmental shift — something visual, auditory, or spatial — that could give you even ten percent more energy for the work that matters most?

One thing to try this week

Make one intentional change to your environment before your most important work block this week. One thing. Not a renovation — a decision. Better lighting. A cleared surface. Music that puts you in the right state. Silence you've been meaning to protect. A space that signals to your brain: this is where I perform.

You don't need a perfect environment. You need an intentional one. When your environment is working with you instead of against you — the energy you bring to every conversation, every call, every opportunity shifts. And so do your results.

But here's what I want you to sit with until next week: everything we've covered today is about the external environment — the space around you. And that's only half the story. Because there is another environment that shapes your performance even more profoundly than the room you're sitting in. It's the one you carry with you into every room you enter. We'll go there next week. Don't miss it.
