What’s Quietly Competing for Your Attention?

Mar 18, 2026

This morning I did something that feels almost a little radical in our culture.

I deleted the Instagram and YouTube apps from my phone.

Not reorganized.

Not moved to another screen.

Deleted.

Now before anyone assumes this is a message about the dangers of social media — it isn’t.

For many of us in business, these platforms can be powerful tools. They allow us to stay visible, bring value to the people we serve, and stay connected to referral partners, clients, and past clients. Used well, they strengthen relationships and expand our impact.

And to be clear, I wasn’t someone who was spending hours scrolling. In many cases I’d go days without opening either app.

Which is why this decision had very little to do with discipline.

Instead, it had everything to do with attention.

Over the past few weeks during prayer, I kept sensing a quiet nudge — one of those gentle prompts that doesn’t come with fireworks but keeps resurfacing nonetheless.

Clear the noise.

Not because something was “wrong.”

But because in a world where so many things compete for our attention, sometimes the most valuable thing we can do is create a little more space to hear clearly.

The interesting thing about distraction is that it rarely shows up looking like distraction.

More often it looks like information.

Or entertainment.

Or something “quick” we check in between other things.

But attention is powerful.

Where we consistently place it shapes our thinking, our decisions, and ultimately the direction of our lives.

So this week, a few questions for reflection:

• Where is most of your attention going right now?

• Is it aligned with what matters most to you?

• Are the tools you use serving your purpose — or quietly pulling you away from it?

• What might create a little more space for clarity in your day?

Social media, technology, and information aren’t the enemy.

But intentional living requires something our culture rarely encourages:

awareness of where our attention is being spent.

Sometimes growth isn’t about adding more.

Sometimes it begins with simply creating a little more room for what matters most.
