The Excellence Shift: Letting Go of Perfection to Perform at Your Best
Jul 23, 2025
What if being great doesn't mean being flawless?
Have you ever delayed something you knew you wanted to do—or needed to do—because it wasn’t quite perfect yet?
That idea you keep tweaking...
That email you keep editing…
The video you keep refilming…
That outreach you keep putting off until it sounds just right...
You're not alone.
Last week, this came up in a few breakthrough coaching conversations. And I want to bring it to you, because it just might be the shift you need too.
We started by getting clear on the literal definitions:
-
Perfectionism is a refusal to accept any standard short of perfection. It’s fear-based and outcome-focused. It leads to hesitation, pressure, and a deep fear of getting it wrong.
-
Excellence on the other hand is the quality of being outstanding or extremely good. It’s purpose-driven and process-focused. It’s fueled by engagement, intention, and growth.
One creates pressure.
The other creates presence.
One leads to hiding.
The other leads to impact.
Excellence allows you to take action before you feel “ready.”
Perfectionism convinces you to wait until you’re flawless.
Here’s the kicker: You can’t stand out if you’re not willing to be seen.
And being seen might mean showing up before everything is polished. Before all the edges are smoothed. Before the entire plan is figured out.
Excellence is forward motion.
Perfectionism is delay dressed up in good intentions.
Let's break this down a bit further:
Outstanding—literally, to stand out. To be willing to take up space, be seen, be visible, and be present rather than polished. Excellence isn’t about flawless execution—it’s about forward motion with full engagement.
Which one are you operating from today?
Challenge for the Week:
-
Where in your work are you holding back because it’s “not ready” or "not quite right"?
-
What would excellence (not perfection) look like if you took action today?
Next time, we’ll unpack how perfectionism can disguise itself as “standards”—and why that distinction really matters.
