Not Off Track… Just Enough
Mar 25, 2026
The other day I walked into the pantry to grab a snack and somehow ended up reorganizing the entire pantry.
Not just grabbing a snack.
Not just straightening one shelf.
Reorganizing.
At some point I stopped and thought, How did I get here?
I didn’t wake up that morning thinking,
“Today feels like a great day to optimize my pantry system.”
And yet… there I was. Fully committed.
That moment has been sitting with me.
Because drift doesn’t usually show up as doing nothing.
It shows up as doing something… just not the thing that actually matters most.
And there’s a reason for that.
Your brain is constantly working to conserve energy.
The prefrontal cortex — the part responsible for focus, decision-making, and intentional action — is incredibly powerful… but it’s also energy-intensive.
So when it gets fatigued, your brain defaults to something easier.
Something familiar.
Something low-stakes.
Something that gives you a quick sense of progress without requiring much effort.
Enter: the pantry.
Or email.
Or scrolling.
Or reorganizing your desk.
Or checking “one more thing.”
It feels productive.
But it’s not always intentional.
And that’s where drift lives.
Not in the obvious moments where we’re completely off.
But in the subtle shifts:
When meaningful work gets replaced with manageable work.
When presence gets replaced with efficiency.
When connection gets replaced with quick check-ins.
You’re still moving.
Still doing.
Still producing.
But just slightly disconnected from what matters most.
And here’s what makes drift even more challenging to catch:
It often hides inside things that are good.
Responsibility.
Productivity.
Helping others.
Staying on top of things.
Which means the question isn’t always, “Am I doing something wrong?”
Sometimes the better question is:
“Am I still aligned with what matters most… or have I just stayed in motion?”
Because over time, what we repeatedly choose — even in small ways — begins to shape how we think, how we show up, and ultimately who we become.
So this week, a few questions to reflect on:
-
Where might you be choosing what’s easy over what’s meaningful?
-
What have you been doing that feels productive… but isn’t truly aligned?
-
Where has your focus shifted without you fully noticing?
-
What’s one thing you know matters — that you could re-engage with intentionally?
Drift doesn’t require a dramatic correction.
It requires awareness.
Because once you see it… you get to choose differently.
And if drift is this subtle — if it can show up even when we’re doing “good” things —
then it raises an important question:
Why does it happen in the first place?
We’ll explore that next.
