In Full Integrity (Part 2)

Jul 08, 2026

The thermostat doesn’t negotiate with the weather.

On integrity under pressure — and why the standard applies especially when conditions are hardest.

Last week we had a 103 degree heatwave. I woke up at 2am in an 85 degree bedroom.

One of our AC units — the one that cools the second floor — wasn't keeping up. My husband's position was that it simply couldn't get the room to 70 degrees because it was 103 outside. The heat was too extreme. The standard, in his view, didn't apply under these conditions.

I disagreed. A thermostat is designed to do one thing — respond to the temperature in the space and work to bring it to the temperature you set. It doesn't factor in what's happening outside. It doesn't negotiate with the weather!

It holds the standard regardless of the conditions. If it isn't reaching the set temperature, something is wrong — full stop.

(We called the technician. Something was wrong. Shocker! -insert sarcasm)

Here's what kept me thinking about this well past 2am: that argument — the standard doesn't apply when conditions are extreme — is exactly the argument we make to ourselves when our integrity starts to slip under pressure.

What integrity under pressure actually sounds like

In mortgage sales, pressure isn't a season — it's the job.

The top producers know this. Rates shift. Competition intensifies. The market tightens and the phone demands more effort for every conversation. The best in this business don't wait for conditions to improve before they perform. They perform — and the conditions adjust around them.

But even at the highest level, the negotiation still shows up. It just wears a more sophisticated disguise.

I would normally follow up consistently — but this market is demanding everything I have right now.

I would normally keep that commitment — but the volume this week made it impossible.

I would normally show up that way — but the conditions aren't right.

It sounds reasonable. It feels justified. And it is — almost word for word — my husband's argument about the thermostat.

Integrity isn't integrity if it only applies when conditions are favorable. That's just convenience. Integrity is what holds when the pressure is highest and the easier thing is loudest.

The standard doesn't move

A thermostat set to 70 degrees is set to 70 degrees whether it's 72 outside or 103. The target doesn't shift because the environment got harder. The system either works — meaning it does what it's designed to do regardless of conditions — or something is wrong and needs to be addressed.

High performers operate the same way. They have a standard — for how they show up, how they follow through, how they treat their clients and partners — and that standard doesn't get adjusted based on how hard the week was. When they aren't hitting it, they don't blame the weather. They look inward and ask what needs to be addressed.

That's not rigidity. That's integrity. And it is one of the most differentiating qualities in this business — because most people quietly lower the standard when conditions get hard, and then wonder why their results follow.

The honest question

Think about the last time the market got hard — or the last time a week went sideways. What happened to your standard? Did your follow-up hold? Did your commitments to your clients and your agents hold? Did your commitments to yourself hold?

Or did you find yourself making the same argument — the conditions were too extreme, the standard couldn't apply this time — and calling that reasonable?

One thing to try this week

Identify one standard you've been quietly lowering because of conditions — market conditions, life conditions, emotional conditions. Name it honestly. And then hold it this week. Not perfectly. Not without effort. Just without negotiating it away.

The thermostat doesn't get credit for holding the temperature on a mild day. It gets tested on the 103 degree day. So do you. And so does your integrity.
